EUROPLANT breeds success
Successful breeding work implies knowing today what will be in line with the market tomorrow. This is our daily challenge. In cooperation with our partners we are continuously defining guidelines, which are the basis of our daily variety selection work. The main objectives of modern potato breeding are commitment to healthy nutrition, environmentally friendly production methods, and protection of natural resources. The requirements of farmers, industry, trade, and consumers are steadily increasing. This is a challenge for our research and breeding partners, trying to match these needs with adequate solutions. In close collaboration with our customers we aim to optimise and accelerate our breeding work through permanent exchange of experiences.
Modern methods of biotechnology and molecular biology have been a vital element of our potato breeding and multiplying for years. Accordingly, in-vitro-culture forms the principal item of the maintenance and rapid multiplication of our varieties. The ELISA test – an immunological assay – provides a method for virus detection; PCR-technologies allow the fast identification of varieties or breeding lines through genetic fingerprinting, and also permit the examination of breeding material for infections by different pathogens. These methods are continuously adapted to current developments.
